Members of an union representing American Airlines Group ( NASDAQ: AAL ) pilots approved a strike mandate ahead on Monday in what could be an overhang for the airline company in the coming months.
The Allied Pilots Association said 99% of all votes were in favor of giving the union the strike authorization with 95% of all members voting. In a demonstration of resolve, APA members will be conducting informational picketing today at all ten of the airline's major hubs - including at airports in Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York.
The union has proposed scheduling and work rules that could benefit pilots along with compensation changes. American Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom told American pilots in March that the airline is prepared to match the new pay rates at Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) and institute the same profit-sharing formula.
Strike authorizations in the airline industry rarely lead to full walkouts and the negotiations are expected to continue.
Shares of AAL moved up 1.05% in early trading on Monday.
