President Biden expressed Thursday that the government had acquired 10 million treatment courses of Pfizer’s Covid pill. According to Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) , the antiviral pill prevents the hospitalization and deaths of high-risk adults by approximately 89%.
The oral medication, Paxlovid, is presumed to be a game-changer in the fight against Covid. The treatment provides doctors with the means of sending patients home with a drug to combat the infection. Potentially relieving stress that hospitals have been under since the beginning of the pandemic.
“My administration is making the necessary preparations now to ensure these treatments will be easily accessible and free,” Biden said in a statement. “This is positive news. This treatment could prove to be another critical tool in our arsenal that will accelerate our path out of the pandemic.”
According to Biden, the pills will be available to citizens by the end of 2021 and will continue through the next year.
Paxlovid is pending a full review by the Food and Drug Administration. Nevertheless, the Biden administration revealed that they are actively working to secure enough treatment for U.S. citizens as the winter months near.
“This is positive news. This treatment could prove to be another critical tool in our arsenal that will accelerate our path out of the pandemic,” Biden said.
Pfizer has agreed to let generic drug manufacturers generate the pill and distribute it to 95 low and middle-income countries. Furthermore, it is waiving royalties for said countries as long as the World Health Organization categorizes Covid as an international health emergency.
