%Google parent company Alphabet () is adding its generative %ArtificialIntelligence (A.I.) technology to its suite of digital assistants and smart home devices.
Going forward, the same technology that underpins Google’s %BardChatbot will also be used in the company’s digital assistant software.
This will enable people to give their digital assistants and connected home devices voice prompts to carry out increasingly sophisticated tasks.
Rather than just retrieving information from the internet, the new devices will be able to set timers and make hands-free phone calls on behalf of their owners, among other things.
The move by Alphabet comes after rival %OpenAI recently announced a new voice command function for its %ChatGPT chatbot, and amid reports that %Apple () is planning to give its voice assistant Siri an A.I. refresh.
Alphabet said the addition of A.I. should enable its digital assistants and connected home devices to make it easier for humans to handle big and small tasks, from planning a trip and creating a grocery list, to typing and sending text messages.
Apple is moving fast to integrate generative A.I. into its various applications such as Gmail and Google Docs, as well as its Pixel smartphones and Android operating system.
For example, A.I. can now post a photograph to social media and caption it for a person, according to Alphabet.
The stock of Alphabet has risen 52% this year and currently trades at $135.24 U.S. per share.
