I recently wrote about Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund ETF ( XLRE ) and concluded it is a solid fund to position for what I think will be a good year for REITs. One of my reservations, however, was that its strategy was based on "proprietary “modified market capitalization” methodology," which can be boiled down to simply holding the largest REITs by market cap with variable weightings. This is largely replicated by other passive REIT funds which means there is not much to tell them apart. It also leads to some disappointing dividend yields....
