Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) introduced incentives to get workers vaccinated against Covid-19, taking a similar approach to what other carriers offered at the start of the year. According to a company memo, the carrier is offering extra pay to employees that are fully vaccinated by mid-November.
Workers that qualify for the incentive are set to receive roughly two days of pay.” The airline noted that for staff that are not not paid on an hourly basis, it would provide them 13 trip segments worth of pay.
“If you have not been vaccinated and choose to do so, this timeline gives you enough time to receive both rounds of a two-series vaccine or the single-dose vaccine,” Southwest wrote to staff.
However, the company noted that the policies are not related to President Joe Biden’s new measures aimed to increase Covid-19 vaccinations. Nevertheless, the company revealed it is prepared “to move toward compliance” with the impending rules. Biden asked the Department of Labour to require that companies with over 100 employees make Covid Vaccines mandatory.
Similarly other carriers have changed company policies upon the pandemic. United Airlines was the first US airline to make vaccines mandatory for its workers, meanwhile Delta, Alaska and Horizon are only requiring that new employees be vaccinated before hiring them. Furthermore, in August delta disclosed that unvaccinated employees would need to pay an additional USD200 a month for healthcare insurance due to their increased risk of hospitalization.
