Spirit Airlines ( NYSE: SAVE ) plans to open a crew base at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The budget airline expects to locate about 150 pilots and about 300 flight attendants in Houston starting this fall. Additional crew, supervisors and support functions will follow as the airline encroaches on an airport that serves as a United Airlines ( UAL ) hub.
Earlier in the year, Spirit announced the opening of an aircraft maintenance facility at Bush International Airport. The airline currently averages about 22 departures a day from IAH..
Spirit Airlines ( SAVE ) also has existing crew bases in Atlanta, Atlantic City, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Miami, and Orlando.
SAVE is still the target of a bidding war between Frontier Airlines ( ULCC ) and JetBlue Airways ( JBLU ). A shareholder to vote on the ULCC offer is set for July 27.
