Spirit Airlines ( NYSE: SAVE ) is slating the hire of more than 4,000 new employees in 2023.
According to an announcement by the airline, the new hires will include not only pilots, but flight attendants, customer support, and aviation maintenance technicians as well. The push to hire comes after the low-cost carrier accepted delivery of 21 new Airbus A320 aircraft in 2022. The airline expects to add 26 more aircraft in 2023 and just recently opened a “state-of-the-art aircraft maintenance facility at George Bush International Airport ( IAH ) in Houston, Texas.”
Further, the company is expanding to new cities, necessitating the hiring. New crew bases were recently established in Atlanta, Houston and Miami while 9 new cities were added to its route map.
A pilot shortage has been a major issue for the airline industry, with many carriers blaming it for reduced capacity and higher costs . As such, many have made hiring a major priority. United Airlines, for example, aims to hire 2,500 pilots in 2023 .
The hiring push in the airline industry contrasts sharply with layoffs across other parts of the economy, particularly in tech. Read more on Amazon’s recent layoffs .
