More than 150 insurance companies have filed a lawsuit against Xcel Energy ( NASDAQ: XEL ) over the 2021 Marshall fire in an attempt to reclaim money the insurers paid in settlements to the wildfire's victims, The Denver Post reported Tuesday.
The joint lawsuit comes less than a month after the Boulder County sheriff and district attorney named Xcel ( XEL ) as one of two entities responsible for the deadly fire, which destroyed more than 1,000 homes and caused more than $2B in property damage.
The investigation said the fire was started in part by a faulty Xcel ( XEL ) power line that sent burning pieces of metal into dry brush at a county park; the company has said it strongly disagrees that its power lines caused the fire, calling the Sheriff's report flawed and incorrect.
The lawsuit filed in Boulder County District Court does not specify how much money the insurance companies are seeking.
