Being a Costco ( COST ) shareholder over the last decade has been exceptionally rewarding. Shares are up over 550% as the company compounded revenue at roughly 9% and operating income above 11% annually. The balance sheet is pristine, and returns on invested capital are reliably above 20%. Membership renewal rates have held above 90% through every consumer cycle. It is a business with an unusual level of predictability that earns a premium multiple, one that Costco has commanded for as long as I can remember....
